The Oaks History and renovations
The Oaks was built in 1848 for Joseph M. Keyes. The Oaks has a framework built of hand-hewn materials pegged together. Nails were used only in the roof and weatherboarding. There are several sets of double entrances in the original rooms.
The Oaks is the ancestrial home of the Liddell family. Mr. Lidell was a vice president of the Greenville, Columbus and Birmingham Railroad and editor of The Conservative, Carrollton's newspaper and also the oldest, continuously printed publication in the state.
Extensive renovation has taken place on the dwelling with a five-bay façade, distinguished by a distyle portico with octagonal columns. The original Greek Revival built in 1848 comprises the front four rooms with 10 foot ceilings, each with refurbished fireplaces with gas logs. The side foyer and dining room with 12 foot ceilings, chandeliers, and fireplaces were added in the 1860's. This stately area of the home offers 2 foyers, a beautiful staircase and refinished original heart pine floors. The primary bathroom wing and great room were added in the 1970's. In the 2013-2014 renovation, the kitchen and family room were updated with vaulted ceilings, transom windows, heated travertine floors, Schuler cabinets and Viking appliances. The master bath boasts marble heated floors, an oversized marble shower. and an original refinished clawfoot tub, Walk-in closet and all new plumbing. As part of the 2013-2014 restoration, a new metal roof, water treatment plant and underground electricity were installed. Castings of the original balcony starred wrought iron were made by MEMPHIS Ornamental Iron Museum and replaced in in 2021.
Carrollton is a remarkably complete and well preserved example of a prosperous, small, rural county seat and trading center. Retaining much of its turn of the century appearance, the town possesses one of the most significant and unaltered assemblages of pre twentieth century architecture in central Mississippi. Just 15 minutes on Highway 82 from Greenwood, MS, home of Viking appliances and the popular Alluvian Hotel, Spa and cooking classes, boutique shopping and a major gateway to the Mississippi Blues Trail.
